Liverpool talent Taiwo Awoniyi is tempted to quit Anfield after being drawn to a summer transfer to Bundesliga outfit Union Berlin, according to Bild.

Union are exploring the potential of signing Awoniyi during the current market, having identified the 23-year-old as a forward option who can help reinforce Urs Fischer’s offensive line.

Awoniyi is said to have responded positively to the potential of joining the Stadion An der Alten Forsterei natives, whose approach was enough for the 23-year-old to snub the chance of signing with PAOK Thessaloniki after the Greek giants sought his services earlier in the week.

Union Berlin were able to put together a strong case file on Awoniyi’s talents from the forward’s season on loan with 1.FSV Mainz 05 last term, for whom he struck the one goal for in 12 German top-flight appearances before his campaign was called short following a severe concussion.

Fischer is on the hunt for new attacking options late in the window after the departure of striker Sebastian Andersson, while the Berlin boss also continues to be without Anthony Ujah after the 29-year-old developed bruising in his knee following surgery.

The pair’s respective absences left Fischer needing to deploy Cedric Teuchert in an unfamiliar position against Karlsruhe in the DFB-Pokal during the week, but the 23-year-old is not seen as the long-term solution.

It remains to be seen whether or not Liverpool chiefs are as warm to Union Berlin’s advances as Awoniyi appears, though the youngster’s future would appear set to take place away from Anfield given PAOK Thessaloniki’s offer was allegedly put to the 6ft talent.

Awoniyi potentially leaving Liverpool for Union Berlin this summer could be on either a full-time or loan deal at this stage, although the Reds accepting a permanent offer would not be that unlikely given the 23-year-old’s struggles to establish himself on Merseyside.

The forward joined Liverpool back in 2015 from Imperial Academy in his native Nigeria, but has never earned a competitive outing for the club and has spent every season since away from Merseyside on loan.

His time with Mainz last term was hardly that impressive either, and Reds chiefs seeing Union Berlin as a cash-buyer may well be enough for them to say their final goodbyes to a U23 international who is under contract at Anfield until the summer of 2023.
