Former Liverpool defender labels Gareth Southgate’s decision as ’embarrassing’

|

The international break finally came to an end last week and England managed to end their run of three games with three wins, and some interesting talking points from them too.

One of the biggest controversies was the decision by Gareth Southgate to leave out Trent Alexander-Arnold from the squad which was met with plenty of frustration and opinion – something that has continued to dominate the discussion almost two weeks later.

On Monday’s edition of Monday Night Football, funnily enough, former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher and fellow pundit Gary Neville discussed the decision on the programme, with Carragher firmly fighting Trent’s corner and rubbishing Neville’s attempts at defending Southgate’s decision, with this particular quote ringing in the ears of listeners, as quoted by AnfieldWatch on Twitter…

It is hard as a Liverpool fan to disagree with Carragher’s comment there as I have the exact same feeling – no disrespect to Kieran Trippier but he has been nowhere near the level of Trent over the last few seasons and as of late had only played five games between December and the international break last week.

Trent is a generational talent and whether he is playing at right-back or anywhere else on the pitch, he makes a huge difference.

Will Trent Alexander-Arnold become the next Liverpool captain?

Yes

No

People do tend to rubbish Trent’s defensive capabilities and I really don’t get why, when you compare Trent with Kyle Walker, he has won more interceptions, tackles, successful tackles, and clearances so far this season. When you then compare him with Reece James this season, he also has won more interceptions, tackles, and successful tackles – so I don’t see where the slander towards his defensive capabilities comes from anymore?

He has grown so much over the last few years and this season has seen a real improvement in his defending – so for me, he has to start at the Euros.

What do you think Liverpool fans, is Trent better than Walker and James? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section down below…
