More often than not we see the young English stars breaking their way into the footballing world get hyped up by the media to such an extent that they never reach their full potential – with the latest comparison for Liverpool teenager Curtis Jones no different.

On the radio show TalkSPORT on Wednesday, presenter Adrian Durham made the bold statement that the youngster could end up being better than Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard…

It is a bold statement from Durham to compare Jones to one of the best players the club has ever seen, with Gerrard captaining the club to Champions League victory as well as being the second-highest goalscorer and the third-highest appearances in the club’s history.

Can Curtis Jones be better than Gerrard?

Yes

Yes

No

Jones has had a great start to his career in the first team, making 10 appearances in all competitions scoring 3 goals with 1 assist so far this season. The great amount of praise comes after his performance against Ajax on Tuesday in the Champions League, with the 19-year-old scoring the winning goal for the Reds helping them to win Group D and qualify for the knockout stages of the competition.

I understand what Durham is getting at – he doesn’t outright say that Jones will be better than Gerrard, he is just suggesting that given the right attention and experience under Klopp, he could become as good a player as Gerrard was for the club. Only time will tell how good a player Jones will become but with the guidance of Klopp and the current talent in the Liverpool midfield, he has the opportunity to learn from the best

Truthfully, there is no telling just how good he could become but there is no doubt of his ability and talent at these early stages of his footballing career.
