There has been plenty of discussion over recent months over the future of Liverpool midfielder Geroginio Wijnaldum, with the Dutchman’s contract running out in the summer and talks failing to materialise with the Reds hierarchy over a new deal.

It is expected for Wijnaldum to leave Merseyside this summer in place of a spot in Ronald Koeman’s Barcelona, with the pair having worked together with the Dutch national team – and Koeman himself confident of securing the midfielder this summer.

Despite the likelihood of him leaving, former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy has offered his thoughts on the situation whilst on TalkSPORT this morning, stating that he doesn’t think the Liverpool faithful would criticise the midfielder for leaving the club and in fact, they would be thankful and appreciative of his efforts for the club during his time at Anfield…

It is hard to think of that Liverpool midfield without Wijnaldum in ti given the important role he has played for us since joining the club in 2016 from Newcastle.

Who is our best midfielder?

Gini Wijnaldum

I have to agree with Murphy, however, as Wijnaldum has given us everything and more along with the rest of the Liverpool squad over the past few seasons with us winning both the Champions League and Premier League in successive campaigns. If Wijnaldum were to go and fulfill a lifelong dream of following in the footsteps of former Dutchmen at the Catalan club such as Joah Cruyff, Ronald Koeman, and Justin Kluivert, etc, then I wouldn’t begrudge him for doing so.

Liverpool fans have been given more than expected from Wijnaldum over the past four and a half years and will be grateful for his impact on the squad and what he has done to help add to the Reds’ trophy cabinet.

What do you think Liverpool fans, would you hold a grudge if Gini left for Barcelona? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section down below…
