The Reds have suffered from injuries at the start of this season, with seven first-team players currently sidelined due to illness or injury.
With the January transfer window now fast approaching, it would make a lot of sense for the club to take a dip into the market after the New Year – but not according to The Athletic journalist David Ornstein who stated on Twitter yesterday that the club doesn’t currently plan to recruit in January…
As things stand Liverpool don’t plan to recruit in January despite injury problems. That doesn’t mean situation won’t change but current hope is to go with existing options. More on tomorrow’s @TheAthleticUK podcast with @Simon_Hughes__ + @markchapman #LFC https://t.co/KGurtmS1st

Ornstein states that Liverpool will likely put their faith in the young defenders such as Nat Phillips and Rhys Williams rather than sign a new defender in January.
I find it strange, however, that this would be the case, given that even with both Phillips and Williams’ inclusion, that still only leaves the Reds with three central defenders to choose from for the remainder of the season.
This is as good a time as ever for the Reds to have to invest in their defence, with only three senior central defenders when both Joe Gomez and Virgil van Dijk return to fitness alongside Joel Matip.
The Reds have been linked with a bountiful of defenders over recent weeks, with the likes of Dayot Upamecano, Milan Skriniar, Ozan Kabak, Perr Schuurs, and Rúben Semedo all doing the round in the rumour mill – but according to Ornstein this may not be the case come to the winter transfer window.
