Reds midfielder Dietmar Hamann has quit international football after being overlooked for Germany’s World Cup squad.

Didi famously scored the last ever goal at the old Wembley Stadium when Germany beat England in an October 2000 World Cup qualifier.

He won a total of 59 caps and scored five goals for the Germans in an international career that began with his debut against SthAfrica in 1997 and included a World Cup final appearance in 2002. His last appearance was in a game against Holland last August.

‘It’s not really a big surprise to me I wasn’t in the squad,’ he said on the clubs official site.

‘That’s it for me now at international level. I’m 32 now and this would have been my last tournament.’

He added: ‘I haven’t spoken to the manager for the last three months so I didn’t think there was much chance of me being included.’

Ed’s comment: ‘Not to worry Didi its their loss, Klinnsman is an idiot!’
