Liverpool finally has a plan B – Opinion

|

Liverpool looked much more like the side we have become so used to over the past seven years in their 2-0 win over Rangers and this was largely down to the tactical intelligence of Jurgen Klopp.

Klopp went with more of a 4-2-3-1 shape rather than the usual 4-3-3, with Thiago Alcantara and Jordan Henderson (who was amazing against Rangers, by the way) at the base of the midfield.

The two holding midfielders definitely played a big part in covering up the gaps that had been opening up far too often in recent weeks, whilst also providing cover behind the marauding runs of full-backs Kostas Tsimikas and Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Perhaps more importantly, Klopp has plenty of options in this system with the likes of Fabinho, James Milner and Arthur Melo, who I can’t help but think would suit this formation really well.

Four forwards occupied the space ahead of the base, Mohamed Salah on the right, Luis Diaz on the left and Diogo Jota floating in and around the spaces joined to Darwin Nunez.

New signing Nunez seemed to thrive in this system and would’ve found the back of the net on multiple occasions if it wasn’t for the heroics of Rangers keeper Allan McGregor.

The thought of having a classy, technical player like Roberto Firmino playing in that number ten role has always been appealing to me and could offer a completely different dimension to this side.

Youngsters Harvey Elliott, Fabio Carvalho and Curtis Jones wouldn’t miss out on any action as all are capable of playing in the ten role as well as in either of the wide positions- without the responsibility to be constantly covering the full-backs.

Am I getting carried away with this? Possibly. The Red’s next match sees them travel to London to face Arsenal at the Emirates and I’m sure fans are really excited to see with what lineup Klopp goes with.
