This season has seen a tough start for the Reds with injuries to plenty of the club’s first-team players and talent – including the season-long absence of the club’s first-choice defensive pairing of Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez.

One thing that has kept the club going and has allowed them to sit top of the Premier League table this Christmas, as well as qualify for the Round of 16 in the Champions League is the efforts and performances of the younger stars at the club.

Players such as Caoimhín Kelleher, Curtis Jones, Neco Williams, Rhys Williams, Nat Phillips have all stepped up to the plate for Liverpool over the last few months when called upon, with Liverpool U23’s coach Gary O’Neil singing their praises during his appearance on the radio show TalkSPORT this morning…

O’Neil is clearly impressed and delighted to see the younger players get promoted from the youth setups and prove themselves on the big stage – with his comments on Curtis Jones no surprise to me.

Will Curtis Jones become a future Liverpool captain?

Yes

Yes

No

No

Despite the ability and the confidence that we see from Jones week in week out, he is clearly still very grounded and down to earth, with him going to watch his former teammates whenever possible.

One name he mentioned is Owen Beck, a young left-back currently playing for the U23’s, who has impressed O’Neil and his staff, with him training at times with the Liverpool first team which shows some clear talent that the youngster possesses with him only just turning 18 in August.

The club are lucky at the moment with some of the talent piercing through the club and long may it continue, with former academy graduates such as Jamie Carragher and Steven Gerrard showing just how incredible the youngsters can be.

What do you think Liverpool fans, do you agree with Gary O’Neil’s thoughts? Let us know in the comments section down below…
