Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard says the club’s sights are already fixed on ending a 17-year title drought next season.

StevieG’s stunning last-minute equaliser in Saturday’s FA Cup final, forced the game into extra time and ultimately a victory on penalties over West Ham.

The team has made terrific progress this season in the Premiership to finish third and reduce the gap to the champions, Chelsea, from 37 to 9 points in a year and Gerrard expects similar strides next season and the chance of a first title since 1990.

In an interview with The Guardian, he said, ‘The reason this club is so successful is because we never dwell on our victories,’

‘This will be no different. We could have lived off the European Cup win this season but everyone can see how hungry we are for more.’

‘We know we’re capable of going very close to the title next season and that’s going to be the target.’

‘ The more trophies like this you win, the more you want. We’ll be giving it everything we’ve got to win the title.’

Reflecting back on his own performance in Saturday’s final, where he made the first goal and scored the two equalisers himself and for good measure also scored one of the penalties in the shoot-out, he said,

‘It’s only when you wake up on Sunday morning you realise what’s happened,’

‘During the course of Sunday I started to think about what we’d achieved. It’s hard to compare this to the Champions League, because that’s the ultimate but lifting the FA Cup is something I’ve always dreamed about.’

‘As an Englishman, it means so much to be able to get your hands on that trophy. I didn’t get to sleep with the trophy this time like I did with the European Cup, though. We came straight home after the match and had a bit of a party, so that went straight back to the club.’

‘It will be nice for me to look back at the game in years to come and see those goals again.’

‘ The key for us was the character in the team. There were a lot of injured players out there in the end and we all felt it on Sunday.’

‘ Now I’ve got a week off and I’ll be ready and raring to go for the World Cup.’
