After Liverpool’s disappointing 1-1 draw with West Brom on Sunday, the Reds faced another injury set back with Cameroonian defender Joel Matip being substituted off just on the hour mark after a strain in his adductor – being replaced by youngster Rhys Williams.

The defender has faced plenty of injury setbacks during his time with the club, with his latest piling on the pressure for Jurgen Klopp and the squad ahead with them now possessing no fit senior centre-backs, leaving just makeshift defender Fabinho and youngsters Williams and Nat Phillips in selection in central defence ahead of tomorrow’s game against Newcastle.

Matip is reportedly due a scan today to assess the damage that has been done, with fears that he could be out for several weeks ahead of an important period of the club’s season over January and February.

The injury to Matip again raises the question as to whether the Reds will need to strengthen in central defence, with the Reds reportedly saying they are still not interested in dipping into the transfer market this January despite many calls to do so.

Sunday World’s Kevin Palmer recently reported how the club will rip-up their initial plans and make a signing during the window to strengthen in defence after the season-long injuries to Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez – leaving the Reds with a mountain to climb this season in their attempt to retain the Premier League title.

Plenty of names have been liked with a move to the club over the past month – with the likes of Dayot Upamecano, Milan Skriniar, Eder Militao, and Roger Ibañez all mentioned to be on the radar of the club.
