Dutch midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum has been a valuable component in the Liverpool squad since joining the Reds in 2016 and this season sees the final year of his contract in motion.

Liverpool had offered the 30-year-old a new deal according to recent reports with a contract that the midfielder has turned down, leaving the club in a difficult situation where they look to keep hold of Wijnaldum but interest from other clubs has left the Dutchman in a tough position over his future.

Spanish giants Barcelona have been heavily linked with a move for Wijnaldum, with manager Ronald Koeman establishing a good relationship with him when in charge of the Dutch national team – and recent reports have suggested that Koeman is extremely confident of securing the £36 million rated on a free transfer in the summer, so much so that Mundial Deportivo have stated that Koeman says Wijnaldum will be a Barcelona player next season.

The Catalan club are confident of bringing in Wijnaldum along with Memphis Depay and Eric Garcia from Lyon and Manchester City respectively on free transfers too, with Barca’s financial troubles meaning the club needs to be as careful as possible with future deals.

It would be a shame to see Wijnaldum leave Merseyside – he has become such an important player and has helped to transform the Reds along with Jurgen Klopp and the rest of the Germans signings to take Liverpool to the pinnacle of European football once again with Champions League and Premier League success over the past two seasons.

I have said before about how important it is for the club to tie Wijnaldum down to a new deal and with him rejecting their latest offer, the club must do all in their power to meet his terms if he is to remain at Anfield.

What do you think Liverpool fans, will Wijnaldum leave the club this summer? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section down below…
