According to a report from Italian news outlet TUTTOmercatoWEB, Liverpool are ‘ahead‘ along with Premier League rivals Chelsea in a race to sign Napoli attacker Dries Mertens who is out of contract this summer.
Mertens, who has started 12 games for the Serie A outfit this season, scoring six goals and assisting four others, is seen as a potential replacement for either Xherdan Shaqiri or Divock Origi who may well depart Anfield at the end of this season – with manager Jurgen Klopp looking for a figure who can play both down the middle and on the wing.
Would you bring Dries Mertens to Anfield?
Even though the Belgian is 32-years-old, the fact that he may be available as a free agent has potentially enticed Klopp to consider him as an option for next season – even taking into account he may have to battle Chelsea and Inter Milan for his signature.
Mertens’ record in the Champions League could also be a major indication as to why we may consider a move for the midfielder, looking at his WhoScored stats in Europe this season, Napoli’s number 14 has bagged a noteworthy six goals in six starts whilst also notching an assist in that time.
Indeed, the Belgium international also inflicted some of his quality on the Reds earlier this campaign, scoring a penalty and helping to condemn us to our first defeat in the Champions League group stages during our 2-0 loss back in September 2019.
Whether or not these impressive numbers have persuaded our club to consider a move for the player is up for debate, but one thing could be certain, as a back-up to the Reds’ main front three, it may well be smart to consider a swoop when taking into account he will soon be out of contract.
