Despite not formally being linked with the player, Liverpool have been boosted in the potential race for Olympique Lyon star Houssem Aouar after his teammate, Memphis Depay, said in an interview with Canal+ that he and Aouar want to play for one of the top three clubs in the world.

This was interpreted by Football.London as a rejection of London club Arsenal, who had been linked with a move for the midfielder amid strong interest over the summer but failed to get a move over the line.

Although it hasn’t been openly said that Liverpool are after the 22-year-old, this has been seen as a big boost for them as well as fellow Premier League club Manchester City, with us and Pep Guardiola’s side often regarded as two of the best in the world at the moment – as suggested by Football.London.

Should Liverpool sign Aouar?

Depay was quoted saying, “We know we play for a very big club but we want to go to one of the top three clubs in the world. Then you will see Houssem, he will get 10 times better. For me, it’s the same,” to Canal+.

With a current market value of £45 million according to Transfermarkt, Aouar won’t come cheap, and with him being sort after by some of the world’s top clubs such as PSG and Juventus alongside the interest from Arsenal.

I think Aouar is certainly a fantastic player and looks like a real number 8, something that would fit perfectly into the Liverpool squad with Dutchman Gini Wijnaldum looking set to leave for a place in Ronald Koeman’s Barcelona team – which would mean the Reds will need to look for midfield reinforcements this summer anyway.
