Liverpool FC’s multi-millionaire director Jeff Vinik joins Philip Nash in leaving his post on the club’s board…

Liverpool FC have today confirmed that American director Jeff Vinik has stepped down from his role at the club.

The 53-year-old was appointed to the Anfield boardroom shortly after the club’s acquisition by American sports investment company the Fenway Sports Group, formally New England Sports Ventures, in October 2010.

Vinik, who is the owner of ice hockey outfit the Tampa Bay Lightning, is estimated to be worth in excess of $500m and made his name in the investment funds market.

A club spokesman confirmed the news saying: “We can confirm that Jeff Vinik has decided to step down as a board member of Liverpool FC, due to a desire to focus on his investment management and sporting interests.

“We would like to thank Jeff for his valuable contribution and wish him well for the future.”

The New Jersey native, who also owns a small percentage in the Boston Red Sox baseball team, is highly regarded for his philanthropy work after donating over $15m to good causes, including a sizeable figure to a North Carolina based engineering school.

Vinik’s departure will ultimately leave the board comprising of five members; John Henry (principle owner), Tom Werner (chairman), David Ginsberg (vice-chairman), Ian Ayre (managing director) and Michael Gordon.

Fellow director and Liverpool’s finance director Philip Nash is also stepping down this month due to family reasons.

Elsewhere, the club has appointed one-time Walt Disney employee Matthew Baxter to the role of chief media officer.

Liverpool’s managing director, Ian Ayre, commented on the development saying: “Our digital media and television operations are a crucial component of the club’s future brand and commercial development.

“Matthew will have global responsibility for establishing a world-class television and digital media business by further developing our digital platforms domestically and internationally.”

Most recently, Baxter was senior vice-president of MGM Networks where he focussed on sales and marketing, creating and launching TV channels around the world.
