Former Anfield defender Mark Lawrenson looks ahead to Saturday’s fixture between Liverpool and league leaders Chelsea…
Ex-Reds centre-back Mark Lawrenson is again sharing his thoughts on Premier League fixtures with the BBC throughout this season.
As in previous years, we will be filtering Lawro’s ramblings each week to bring you his thoughts and predictions on games involving Liverpool.
This weekend sees the Merseysiders play rivals Chelsea for the first time since Jose Mourinho’s men effectively cost Liverpool the title back in April.
Here’s what Lawro has to say about the game in full…
“Because of his team selection against Real Madrid on Tuesday night, this is now the biggest game of Brendan Rodgers‘ managerial career at Liverpool.
“You can only think that the team he sent out at the Bernabeu – and the players he left out – was picked with a view to this game, and beating Chelsea.
“I don’t see that happening, especially with Daniel Sturridge still unavailable up front for the Reds.
“Liverpool’s team has changed so much since what happened here in April, when Chelsea won to derail the Reds’ title bid.
“This game will bring back a lot of memories of that day for some, especially for Steven Gerrard after his infamous slip.
“Liverpool’s new players will not view Saturday as a chance for revenge but, like that day, Chelsea will mean business again. They always do.
“After such a fantastic start to the season, Jose Mourinho’s have not been at their usual level of late.
“In the Champions League they went through the motions against Maribor and, in the Premier League, they were not at their best against QPR after letting Manchester United back into the game in the last 10 minutes at Old Trafford.
“But, as we know, they are still extremely difficult to beat even when they are not firing on all cylinders. They are the Premier League leaders and title favourites for a reason.”
Lawro’s prediction: 1-1
Each week Lawro invites a guest to give their predictions before seeing who guesses the most scores correctly. This week he’s up against Football Manager 2015, the latest edition of the long-running computer game series.
FM’s prediction: 0-3 (Diego Costa, Eden Hazard, Willian)
