Former Anfield defender Mark Lawrenson looks ahead to Saturday’s fixture between Liverpool and Stoke City…
Ex-Reds centre-back Mark Lawrenson is again sharing his thoughts on Premier League fixtures with the BBC throughout this season.
As in previous years, we will be filtering Lawro’s ramblings each week to bring you his thoughts and predictions on games involving Liverpool.
This weekend sees 11th visit 12th in the Premier League as the Merseysiders entertain Stoke City at Anfield.
The hosts will be looking to end a run of three consecutive defeats in the competition that has seen the future of manager Brendan Rodgers called into question.
Here’s what Lawro has to say about the game in full…
“I was in Bulgaria to watch Liverpool’s draw with Ludogorets in the Champions League on Wednesday for BBC Radio 5 live and no part of their team is playing well at present.
“Consequently, in goal, defence, midfield and attack they look extremely short on confidence.
“Reds manager Brendan Rodgers keeps changing the team to try to find a winning formula, but it has not worked. Daniel Sturridge’s continuing absence through injury remains a major problem.
“Rodgers’ team against Ludogorets was probably the most defensive-minded of his time in charge of Liverpool and he was right to abandon his attacking principles.
“Yes, the Reds should have won that game but they still got a point and that might just give them a base to work from, which is something they badly need at the moment.
“What Rodgers needs to do now is to decide on his best team and stick with it, because until he does that it suggests he does not know what it is.
“Stoke are having a strange old season, and seem to be better on the road than they are at home which is a reversal of their usual form. Even so, I just have a feeling that Liverpool might scrape a win.”
Will LFC Stick With Rodgers?
“I don’t think there’s any doubt about that. It’s got even more knee-jerk. You lose a game, you’re an idiot, you win and you’re an absolute hero.
“I don’t think there’s any great clamour from the owners to get rid of him. This is his time, when you’re not winning games, for him to show what he can do as a manager.
“I think the time to judge Liverpool will be when they have Daniel Sturridge back and he has been back for six to 10 matches.”
Lawro’s prediction: 2-0
Each week Lawro invites a guest to give their predictions before seeing who guesses the most scores correctly. This week he’s up against German comedian (a contradiction in terms surely?!?) Henning Wehn.
Henning’s prediction: 2-1
