Former Reds defender Mark Lawrenson looks ahead to West Bromwich Albion vs. Liverpool and attempts to predict the result…
Ex-Anfield centre-back turned media pundit Mark Lawrenson has expressed his thoughts ahead of Liverpool’s trip to West Brom in the Barclays Premier League.
Sunday’s match will be new Baggies boss Pepe Mel’s third in charge and the Spaniard will be eager to arrest a slump which has seen them slip into a relegation fight.
Recent meetings between the two have been mixed with Liverpool winning the previous encounter this season 4-1 but losing both fixtures last season.
Writing in his regular ‘Lawro Predicts’ column for the BBC, the 56-year-old predicts the home side will earn a valuable point.
Here’s what he had to say in full…
“Liverpool brushed West Brom aside at Anfield in October when Steve Clarke was in charge of the Baggies, and he admitted afterwards that he got his tactics wrong because they were too open.
“Pepe Mel is known as an attack-minded manager but I cannot believe he will make the same mistake. He needs a point, and a draw against Liverpool would be a good result.
“The one thing Mel should not do is play with a high line. If he does that against Liverpool, Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge will rip West Brom apart.
“I have seen Baggies centre-back Diego Lugano lots of times and you would be better playing me in a high line than him – he has no pace whatsoever.”
Lawro’s prediction: 1-1
Each week Lawro invites a guest to give their predictions before seeing who guesses the most scores correctly. This week he’s up against comedian, novelist and TV presenter David Baddiel.
“West Brom have had an up and down season and they have missed Romelu Lukaku, who went to Everton on loan instead of spending another season with them,” commented the Chelsea fan.
“Liverpool have been brilliant at times and Suarez is arguably the best player in the world. Sometimes I watch him and think he is the best in the world, and I think he will bag a couple.”
David’s prediction: 1-2
