No agreement is currently in place though and no medical scheduled…

Widespread weekend speculation that a deal for key attacking target Mohamed Salah was finally close to completion appears to have been wide of the mark.

The well-sourced Liverpool ECHO has today stated that talks with Roma are in fact still ongoing, with the player himself currently on holiday in his native Egypt.

Although they believe a positive conclusion to proceedings is likely, there is currently no agreement over the fee or payment structure in place and no medical has been booked.

Much of the speculation to the contrary appears to have stemmed from social media where a supposed friend of Salah posted a photo of himself with the player and the words: “Good luck bro in Liverpool, you are a legend and you deserve to be in Anfield.”

The same person later added: “Congratulations, you Egyptians. Mohamed Salah officially joined Liverpool, booking tickets and travelling Tuesday (to) sign.”

The former Chelsea forward’s agent, Ramy Abbas, has since rubbished the claims.

“It’s amazing what one fan picture, along with a stab-in-the-dark caption, will lead many to believe… #fakenews,” he said via Twitter.

Liverpool had a bid of £28million for the 25-year-old rejected earlier this month and the Serie A outfit are believed to be demanding closer to £40million.

Salah excelled last term as I Giallorossi finished runners-up to Juventus in the Italian top-flight, notching 15 goals and 18 assists during 31 league appearances.
