With the January transfer window just around the corner the Reds have been linked heavily with an abundance of defensive talent as of late, with names such as Dayot Upamecano, Milan Skriniar, and most recently a £27m move for Perr Schuurs from Ajax.

The latest name on the list comes in the form of 18-year-old Sporting Lisbon left-back Nuno Mendes, who has been linked with a move to Liverpool prior to him agreeing on a new deal with the Portuguese club.

It has been reported by the Daily Mail via A Bola that Mendes has held off from agreeing on a new contract with Lisbon after the reported interest from the Reds as he is worried the club what back away from a deal if his release clause was set too high.

Currently, the youngster’s release clause sits at £40m – and with the current financial climate, a deal would likely not materialise if the clause was set too high.

With the ability to play at left-back as well as left-midfield, Mendes is a versatile player who could offer something of value to the Reds – but Lisbon are keen to tie him down to an improved contract after his impressive performances.

I think he would be a great signing for the club and with Andy Robertson and Kostas Tsimikas already at left-back, the club would likely try and mold him into left-midfield permanently or even left-wing with his ability capable of such a transition, if the club were to make a move that is.

Wha do you think Liverpool fans, would Nuno Mendes be a good fit? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section down below…
