With the January transfer window just a few weeks away, Liverpool will reportedly be in the market to sign a central defender after the season-long injuries to usual first-choice pairing Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez has left the Reds with just one senior central defender in Joel Matip.
That means that the Reds have been linked with numerous defensive talent across Europe, with the likes of RB Leipzig’s Dayot Upamecano and Ibrahima Konaté, Real Madrid’s Eder Militao, Ajax’s Perr Schuurs, and Inter Milan’s Milan Skriniar all linked with a move to Merseyside.
The latest name to hit the rumour mill is that of AS Roma’s £13.5 million rated Brazilian defender Roger Ibañez, who is on loan at the Giallorossi from parent club Atalanta B.C. According to AS Roma Live, the Reds are interested in a move for the defender before a permanent deal could become available for Roma to take advantage of from Atalanta.
Who is Liverpool's best CB right now?
Reports say that Ibañez could cost anywhere up to £36 million in the club were to try and secure the Brazilian’s signature – with him impressing so far this season for the Italian side.
I don’t think this will be a move that materialises for the Reds this winter or even in the future – with the club likely to opt for a defender with more Premier League experience in January due to the quick demand and need for someone to climatise and fit in ahead of a busy second half to the season. I don’t doubt Ibañez’s ability as he s clearly playing well to be linked with a move to the Reds but it just doesn’t seem the right fit for me.
Brighton defender Ben White is a player that would be a great fit given his age and experience in the league – with the 23-year-old currently rated at £19.8 million according to Transfermarkt.
