The January transfer window is fast approaching and the Reds have been linked with plenty of options in defence after the season-long injuries to Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez.

Despite the need for defensive reinforcements this winter, this hasn’t stopped the club from being linked with players in other departments, such as in midfield with the possible soon to be departure of Gini Wijnaldum.

The latest name on the list comes in the form of Portuguese and Lille midfielder Renato Sanches, who the club have reportedly already reached an agreement to sign with his current club in and £18 million deal.

Sanches had seen a stint with Swansea back in the 2017/18 season but failed to make much of an impression in the Premier League at the time, with his parent club at the time, Bayern Munich, not providing him with sufficient game time and him struggling to adapt to the league.

However, Sanches has managed to spark his career again at still the tender age of 23 with Lille and has impressed since joining the French outfit last year. This season the midfielder has played 8 games in central midfield, helping Lilee to currently sit top of Ligue 1 after the first 16 games.

There is no doubting Sanches’ talent, the midfielder won the Golden Boy award in 2016 ahead of Marcus Rashford as the best European player under the age of 21 after winning the Euro’s with Portugal and breaking through at Benfica the season prior and helping them to the Champions League quarter-finals.

The type of player that Sanches is and his physical ability and position in midfield would make him a great replacement for Wijnaldum if the midfielder were to leave this summer – with both Barcelona and Inter Milan linked with the Dutchman.
