According to reports popular Argentine midfielder Maxi Rodriguez is set to become the latest first team player to depart Anfield this summer.

The former Atletico Madrid star is expected to return to childhood club Newell’s Old Boys after spending 2 and 1/2 years on Merseyside.

The 31-year-old international has a year left on his contract but will probably depart for nothing after previously expressing his desire to return to South America following 10 years playing in Europe.

The Reds are likely to be happy to get his wages of the books as they look to revamp the club in the wake of the arrival of Brendan Rodgers.

After joining in January 2010 on a free transfer, Maxi has managed 17 goals in 72 appearances for Liverpool under Rafael Benitez, Roy Hodgson and Kenny Dalglish.

If the news is confirmed Maxi will join Dirk Kuyt and Fabio Aurelio in making moves away from the club during the current close season.

A versatile and reliable option his signing has proved a canny one and should the player leave it will be with the best wishes of everyone connected with the club.

No official word has yet been forthcoming from either Liverpool or Maxi but we will bring you their comments and reaction as soon as we get it…
