Highly sought-after Norwegian starlet Martin Odegaard has given Liverpool hope of beating a host of other leading clubs to his signature…
Talented 15-year-old Martin Odegaard is widely reported to be set for a trial at Liverpool next month ahead of a possible permanent switch at the end of the season.
The attacking midfielder is regarded as one of the game’s brightest prospects after breaking a string of appearance records.
In August, Odegaard became the youngest Norwegian international of all time when making his full debut against the United Arab Emirates at the age of just 15 years and 253 days.
Last month he added the title of the youngest player to ever feature in a European Championship qualifier after playing the final 25 minutes of a 2-1 win over Bulgaria.
Even before his recent rise to wider prominence, Europe’s elite were already tracking the Strømsgodset teenager.
Odegaard, also the youngest footballer to ever play in Norway’s top flight, is already believed to have trained with the likes of Bayern Munich, Manchester United and Stuttgart, while a tour of Real Madrid also took place recently.
Now it seems Liverpool are next on the agenda as the teenager weighs up where his long-term future lies.
“Liverpool have always been my dream club,” revealed Odegaard to German newspaper Sport Bild this week. “But I will not let this affect my decision when I choose a new club.
“It’s all about finding the team that is best for me and for my development. That is not necessarily Liverpool.
“I haven’t really thought about my future yet. I will end the season here and then visit a number of clubs. I have not made a final decision yet, though.
“Of course, it’s flattering when you hear that big clubs are after you, but I don’t think about it too often.”
Lauded for his balance, agility, confidence and ferocious shot, Drammen-born Odegaard has notched five goals in 23 Tippeligaen appearances to date.
Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers is certainly aware of the precocious youngster and was quoted last week as saying: “I know he’s a big talent, at that age to be playing senior football at 15 and in a competitive league.
“He’s got wonderful ability and wonderful talent, but there’s nothing much more to say on him.”
A senior international at 15? That’s just ridiculous! Given the records Odegaard is breaking and the list of club’s interested in him, it’s fair to say he might be a little bit special. Of course he wouldn’t be the first player to fail to live up to such hype and with an asking price believed to be as much as £12m, his signing would carry significant risk. Should we be in for Odegaard, Rodgers’ track record of blooding and nurturing youth should stand us in good stead, in addition to the player’s obvious allegiance. He could be a real coup for the club.
