Liverpool are reportedly ready to battle it out with fellow Premier League giants for Juventus wantaway star defender Matthijs de Ligt.

According to Calciomercato, The Juventus defender wants out of the Serie A club after failing to settle in Italy since his big-money move from Ajax.

The report suggests both Liverpool and Chelsea are the favourites to land the 22-year-old’s signature; surprising considering Liverpool’s depth in the centre-back position.

It could be the lure of partnering him with Liverpool’s talismanic defender and his compatriot Virgil Van Dijk that is the factor for considering de Ligt as a potential recruitment for the Reds.

Nevertheless, Jurgen Klopp still has Joel Matip, Joe Gomez and Ibrahim Konate at his disposal, so a move for the Dutch international would be odd.

However, De Ligt would certainly provide Liverpool’s squad with some undeniable competition and this is always a vital cog to have for a trophy-chasing team.

It remains to be seen whether or not Liverpool pursue any deal with the talented defender, but we can’t see it happening unless one of the current centre-back options leave the club this summer.
