Rafa’s Views On Win Against ManU

Rafa Benitez was thrilled to see Liverpool beat ManU, as we came from behind to secure a victory that should make our intentions for the season clear. Rafa felt we showed character and quality to come back from the early goal setback and deserved our win, as he explained to Sky Sports 1:

‘It was really good. We conceded an early goal but after we showed character and we were on top against a good team with quality.

‘We were working really hard and in the second half we were the best team.

‘We were doing a good job in the first half but we wanted to win so we spoke about confidence and determination (at half-time).’

The understanding and new partnership of Dirk Kuyt and Robbie Keane, in place due to the fact that Fernando Torres was only fit for a place on the bench, was highlighted as a key factor and their work ethic for the Reds sounded out, he added:

‘I think their understanding was really good. Both players were pressing, which meant that we could go a little bit higher, so I think that was really important for the team.’

Stevie Gerrard, along with Torres, wasn’t fit to start the match but both were named on the bench, with Stevie coming on midway through the second half. His introduction, although a risk that Rafa concedes, was one that saw our talismanic captain give us a lift, Rafa also added:

‘I thought that we could do something to win it so we took the risk.

‘He was not fit for 15 days but he has the quality and the character and it was also a boost for the supporters.’

This win lays down a marker, and if we can keep the form going up until Christmas, which isn’t always something we manage with a lot of Champions League matches in this time, then as our second half to the season is almost always stronger then we will remain in the hunt for the title until the bitter end, all being well.
