A Liverpool side including new signings Emre Can and Rickie Lambert beats Preston North End 2-1 at Deepdale…
Following a 2-1 defeat to Brondby in midweek, Liverpool recorded their first pre-season victory of the summer against Preston North End on Saturday.
The experimental squad which had played in Denmark on Wednesday night was supplemented by the inclusion of new signings Emre Can and Rickie Lambert.
The pair both started at Deepdale and Can, in particular, stood out early on; covering lots of ground and producing some neat touches and passes.
Preston looked the more dangerous side going forward however with Joe Garner, Neil Kilkenny and Josh Brownhill all going close from distance.
Liverpool were dealt a blow when Can had to be replaced after just 20 minutes and his replacement, Jordan Ibe, soon missed a great opportunity to open the scoring.
Others in red to have a sight of goal during the opening 45 minutes included Fabio Borini, who is on the verge of joining Sunderland, and Lambert.
With the half-time whistle imminent, the hosts took the lead from a corner through Brownhill after Brad Jones had brilliantly saved Garner’s initial close-range effort.
The usual deluge of substitutions followed with left-back Jose Enrique a notable replacement for Liverpool after an injury wrecked 2013-14 campaign.
Action wise, Preston continued to cause the away side’s rearguard plenty of problems with veteran forward Kevin Davies picking up where Garner had left off.
One of Liverpool’s most impressive second-half performers was young Spanish attacker Suso, back from a loan spell at Almeria.
The 20-year-old did brilliantly to bring the scores level in the 74th minute; cutting onto his left foot and curling past Thorsten Stuckmann into the far corner of the net.
Three minutes later and the Merseysiders were in front when Kristoffer Peterson made it two in two games after good work from Ibe.
The turnaround was harsh on Preston and they almost conceded a third via Conor Coady in the closing stages.
Liverpool now head to America to take part in the International Champions Cup, beginning with a fixture against Roma on Thursday.
The club’s World Cup contingent and new wideman Lazar Markovic will link up with the squad and feature at some point in the tournament.
