Nuri Sahin has now successfully passed his medical and will wear the number 4 jersey over the coming year. Sahin becomes the first Turkish player in Liverpool’s history and subsequently revealed in an interview with Liverpoolfc.com how Real Madrid team mate and former Reds midfielder Xabi Alonso helped convince him to make the move.
“Xabi is a person who really cares about football. He’s in love with football. I’m the same, and that’s why we had a lot of conversations. When I arrived at Real Madrid, we spoke about German football and Italian football. He likes football! When he heard Liverpool were interested in me, he started telling me about Liverpool. He is still in love with Liverpool Football Club, I think! It’s crazy how he was telling me about Liverpool. He was saying, ‘Go there, you will love it. The fans will take care of you and love you’ and things like that. He said Anfield is the best stadium in the world. Xabi won a lot of trophies here, and hopefully we can do that too,” said the 23-year-old.
After a protracted chase Liverpool have pipped Premier League rivals Arsenal to the loan signing of midfielder Nuri Sahin…
Turkish international Nuri Sahin has agreed to join Liverpool on a season-long loan deal from Spanish giants Real Madrid, subject to completing a medical.
A statement today on the club’s official website Liverpoolfc.com confirmed the news and began: “Liverpool Football Club have reached an agreement with Real Madrid to sign Nuri Sahin on a season-long loan deal, subject to the player passing a medical.”
The temporary switch is said to have cost £5m with the Merseysiders also paying the player’s wages in full. The agreement does not include an option to buy.
The 23-year-old only joined Real Madrid from Borussia Dortmund last summer but following an early season knee injury found his first-team chances limited in Spain.
Despite being voted the Bundesliga’s player of the season during his last campaign in Germany, Sahin managed only 10 appearances in total for Los Blancos last term.
Speaking after Liverpool had defeated Hearts on Thursday night, Reds manager Brendan Rodgers said of the player: “He’s a great technician. If you go back, he was the player of the season in Germany and the captain of Dortmund.
“He was fantastic at a very young age and got a move to Real Madrid, and due to injuries and various factors, it hasn’t worked out for him.
“But he’s a wonderful player technically and tactically. He understands the game, and we hope that his extra bit of quality will really help the group.”
Arsenal had been expected to beat Liverpool to the player but contractual wrangling earlier in the week has allowed the Reds to capitalise. The Gunners were thought to have wanted the option to buy but Madrid still feel Sahin has a future at the Bernabeu.
The signing will not have been ratified in time for Sahin to make his debut against Manchester City this weekend however.
Sahin is a very talented player and a great capture for the club. His technical style of play will perfectly suit Rodgers tactics. Although there is no option to buy it is difficult to see a future for the Turk at Madrid, especially if they secure Luca Modric, so hopefully he will enjoy a successful time at Anfield and fall in love with the club. His purchase will presumably speed up the exit of the likes of Jay Spearing and Charlie Adam.
