The lowdown on the man in the middle for Liverpool’s trip to Newcastle United on Sunday…
The Premier League has announced the officiating teams who will be taking charge of top-flight fixtures during Matchweek 7 of the 2017/18 season.
The players of Liverpool and Newcastle United, who meet at St James’ Park for a 4.30pm BST kick-off on Sunday, October 1, will be joined on the pitch by referee Craig Pawson.
Scott Ledger and Constantine Hatzidakis are his designated assistants, while Bobby Madley will be patrolling the technical areas in the role of fourth official.
Pawson’s five previous games this season, which include Liverpool’s 4-0 victory over Arsenal at the end of August (six yellow cards shown, two to Liverpool), have yielded a total of 25 yellow cards and two reds.
During 2016/17 the Reds encountered the 38-year-old on five occasions; winning all four league matches but also suffering a shock home FA Cup exit to Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Coincidently, Newcastle’s one match under Pawson’s control last term was also against Wolves but it ended in a 1-0 away victory for the Magpies.
Overall, in his 34 matches refereed, the Yorkshire native handed out a total of 139 yellow cards and five red.
His yellow card average finished at 4.08-per-game, with a red card shown every 6.8 matches.
Pawson is associated with the Sheffield and Hallamshire County Football Association and has been part of the Select Group of Premier League referees since 2013.
He was promoted to FIFA’s list for European and International matches in 2015.
