The lowdown on the man in the middle for Liverpool’s trip to Southampton on Sunday…
The Premier League has announced the officiating teams who will be taking charge of top-flight fixtures during Matchweek 27 of the 2017/18 season.
The players of Liverpool and Southampton, who meet at St Mary’s for a 4.30pm GMT kick-off on Sunday, February 11, will be joined on the pitch by referee Martin Atkinson.
Peter Kirkup and Stuart Burt are his designated assistants, while Kevin Friend will be patrolling the technical areas in the role of fourth official.
Atkinson’s 22 previous games this season have yielded a total of 74 yellow cards and four red.
Liverpool are undefeated in their three matches played under the 46-year-old’s control this term, winning one and drawing two.
The most recent of those was the thrilling 3-3 draw with Arsenal on December 22 (one yellow card shown, none to Liverpool).
By contrast, Southampton haven’t crossed paths with Atkinson in over a year, dating back, coincidentally, to the EFL Cup semi-final second leg success over Liverpool in January 2017 (no cards shown).
The Bradford native’s yellow card average this campaign currently stands at 3.36-per-game, with a red card shown every 5.5 matches.
Atkinson is associated with the West Riding County Football Association and has been part of the Select Group of Premier League referees since 2005.
He was promoted to FIFA’s list for European and International matches in 2006.
