The lowdown on the man in the middle for Liverpool’s opening day trip to Watford on Saturday…

The Premier League has announced the officiating teams who will be taking charge of top-flight fixtures during the first round of 2017/18 fixtures.

The players of Liverpool and Watford, who meet at Vicarage Road for a 12.30pm BST kick-off on Saturday, August 12, will be joined on the pitch by referee Anthony Taylor.

Gary Beswick and Peter Kirkup are his designated assistants, while Paul Tierney will be patrolling the technical areas in the role of fourth official.

Liverpool had a good record last season in games overseen by Taylor; winning three, drawing two and losing none of the five matches played under his watchful eye.

Amongst the victories were important home wins over neighbours Everton and fellow top four protagonists Tottenham Hotspur, although they did drop points to relegated Sunderland at Anfield.

Watford, coincidentally, also played Everton and Spurs on the two occasions they crossed paths with Taylor during 2016/17; beating the Toffees at home but losing heavily away to Mauricio Pochettino’s side.

Overall, in his 41 matches refereed last term, the Manchester native handed out a total of 161 yellow cards and five red.

His yellow card average finished at 3.92-per-game, with a red card shown every 8.2 matches.

Taylor, 38, is associated with the Cheshire County Football Association and has been part of the Select Group of Premier League referees since 2010.

He was promoted to FIFA’s list for European and International matches in 2013.
