This season has seen some real issues in defence for Liverpool, with injuries galore to the club’s centre-back options leaving them with no senior options in central defence at one point during the current campaign.

The January transfer window saw the club bring in two new centre-backs in the form of Ben Davies from Preston North End and Ozan Kabak from Schalke 04 on an initial six-month loan with an option to buy at the end of the season for £18 million.

Despite the acquisitions, the club are still likely to make moves in the summer transfer market in their search for further cover and options in central defence, with the latest link with a move to Merseyside coming in the form of 23-year-old Serbian centre-back Nikola Milenkovic according to FiorentinaNews, who has impressed during his time with Italian side Fiorentina.

Standing at 6ft5, Milenkovic is a real physical presence at the back and has been a real rock in defence for the Italian club, with him also drawing interest from fellow Premier League club’s Manchester United and Manchester City according to ReadSport.

With a current market value of £25.2 million according to Transfermarkt and his contract running out with the club in 2022, Liverpool could get hold of the Serbian for a good price if they can negotiate well with Fiorentina and the defender as his deal continues to run down.

After receiving a call-up to his national side for the 2018 World Cup, Serbia manager Mladen Krstajic even labeled the then 20-year-old as the new Nemanja Vidic and it isn’t hard to see why given his stature and capabilities in defence.

I definitely think the defender would be a great option for our defence and a good partner for Van Dijk when he eventually returns from injury.
