As part of our build-up to Liverpool’s match with Newcastle United on Saturday we’ve interviewed fans of the opposition for their thoughts on the game…
Seventh-placed Liverpool travel over to Tyneside this weekend for a Premier League fixture with in-form Newcastle United.
The fixture traditionally brings excitement and lots of goal, will this encounter provide more of the same?
To discuss the game and plenty more besides, we left a number of questions on Newcastle fans forum Talk of the Tyne.
Here’s what some of their members had to say (brace yourself for swearing, passion and sarcasm)…
Q. It’s been a difficult start to the season for Newcastle United. What have been the main issues?
UKRocks0007 (UK) – The same ones as before! Alan Pardew is not good enough, the coaching staff are not good enough and Mike Ashley’s lack of investment and disregard for the fans and traditions of the club.
Poisoned Monkey (PM) – Issues is exactly the right word. Take any one from the manager, tactics, formation, defence, squad size, lack of strikers and injuries. Our best eleven hasn’t been on the park yet, but even when it does it will be inhibited by the manager and his tactical ineptness.
The Corner (TC) – Our buying policy. We have the lowest net spend of any club in the Premier League and that’s been the story during Ashley’s reign. We are not told where the real money goes. We’ll sell any player if it means making a slight profit and ignore the fact it will leave a gaping hole in our squad. We continually buy from abroad and lets be very clear here, it’s not because we have better scouts or appeal more to a potential superstar, it’s because we pay them more than they’d get at home, more than they’re worth and hype them up so much to appease the fans who wonder who these people are. Most are not PL standard but don’t tell anyone.
Q. Some better results have arrived of late. Are they the start of a rise up the table or just a temporary blip?
UK – I fully expect normal service will be resumed soon (playing shite and getting beat)! See what happens in December when some very tough games come up.
PM – Honestly? A temporary blip. Leicester were outscrapped and Spurs were awful. Any team with a modicum of attacking nous will have plenty of joy against us.
TC – We have a difficult run of fixtures coming up so beating a newly promoted side and a very poor spurs side, who seem to be going backwards very fast, is just a blip. It may give us confidence in the short term and because there are many poor sides in the league we’ll pick up enough points up to stay up. Which is the level of our ambition nowadays.
OfficeMonkey (OM) – Positive results are a blip under Alvin Mildew. His entire ‘career’ prove this.
Q. Speculation is permanently circulating about the future of manager Alan Pardew. Is he the right man for the job?
OM – He isn’t even the right man for the job in his own marital home!
UK – No and he never will be! He is perfect for Mike Ashley because he does what the fat man wants him to without question (assume the position Alan).
PM – That would depend what the job is? If it’s being a smarmy gobshite then yes, yes indeed. No one can ever take his LMA manager of the year award away but, that one season apart, he’s continually sent out terribly unbalanced sides devoid of creative players and hoped for the best. You can’t win anything with a team of Hatem Ben Arfa’s, but you can fail to score from 300 corners with a team of hard working cloggers.
TC – Of course not. He is tactically inept and certainly doesn’t know how to change a team to counter an opponent’s style. If it looks like he does every now and then please be sure to file it under ‘fluke’. It’s obvious to most of us NUFC fans that we hear little from him when we lose and only how good he did when we win. He has no morals, no scruples and little understanding about how to use a player’s strengths.
Q. Owner Mike Ashley seems determined to get his mitts on another club in the shape of Scottish giants Glasgow Rangers. Any thoughts on the development?
OM – Let’s hope he fucks off and they put a price on his head. Even his own parents hate him. A loser in every aspect of life.
UK – If he sells up then great, no doubt the devious, cancerous cunt will have found a way to own both and rake the money in.
PM – Money, Money, Money. We all hate him, but by heck he knows how to promote his one and only true love which is Sports Direct.
TC – If it was a Disney film he’d be doing this to sell up here and leave us for good. The reality is he’s more evil than you get in a Disney film and while we make him so much money he’ll never leave us alone. Buying Rangers is about greed and wanting more money, more power and another avenue to advertise his tat shops.
Q. Any notable incomings or outgoings over the summer at St James’ Park that we should be aware of?
PM – The powers that be hatched an incredible transfer plan over the summer; managing to replace the departed Loic Remy and Yohan Cabaye in one fell swoop. Remy Cabella may have almost replaced them both in name but so far not in any way performance wise. Indeed he’s been ‘Pardewed’ in record time. Another Creative Player abandoned yet again.
UK – Nope.
TC – If you spot any please let us know.
Q. Who has been your best player so far this season?
UK – Probably me, done a fucking amazing Cruyff turn the other week and scored from it as well. Fell over like but was worth it.
PM – Best player? More like most average. Probably Jack Colback, purely for the fact he’s hard working.
TC – Papiss Cisse has scored a few but needs a lot of chances. Tim Krul would be brilliant behind a good defence but has made mistakes this term. Moussa Sissoko ran Spurs ragged but that only happens once a few months. Other than those I’m out.
Q. What do you make of Liverpool’s summer transfer dealings and our chances this season?
UK – Couldn’t care less but you won’t do as well as last season.
PM – In a way a similar situation to us. It’s impossible to bring 6/7 players in and have them all settle and adapt to the PL immediately. No win situation replacing Luis Suarez, but did you really need all these Spanish full-backs? Think you’ve been unlucky missing Daniel Sturridge almost all season but you’ll pick up once he’s fit and firing. Top 5 beckons.
TC – Mario Balotelli will get all your headlines this season as he does wherever he goes. I wondered at the time if Brendan Rodgers was looking for someone exactly like him to replace Suarez. Someone to take the attention from the team and be that love/hate figure. Big mistake in my eyes as he isn’t anywhere near as good to overcome it. The hardest part now for Liverpool is sustaining that push they’ve had recently and ignoring the press who will be looking for weaknesses. They built you up nicely and will now look to dismantle you. I think you’ll get a Champions League placing again but you need a couple of big players to challenge the money boys.
Q. If you could pick a combined 11 from the two squads what would it be?
UK – Just use yours cos ours is shite!
PM – Krul, Janmaat, Skrtel, Lovren, Enrique, Sterling, Gerrard, Sissoko, Cabella, De Jong, Sturridge.
TC – Erm, the Liverpool team.
Boom Boom – Krul, Janmaat, Coloccini, Lovren, Enrique, Sterling, Gerrard, Sissoko, Lallana, Sturridge, Cisse.
Q. What is your probable line-up and tactical approach for the game?
OM – Pardew’s approach will be going for a draw. He’d be quite happy with 38 draws a season and a loss in all cups.
UK – It should be the opposite of whatever Pardew chooses.
PM – Same Starting XI as Spurs but with Cisse up front. I expect us to contain for 60 minutes then try and sneak a 1-0. If you score early,we’ll resort to lumping everything to the back post.
Q. What’s your prediction for the result?
Boom Boom – 1-1.
PM – Balotellli to hit form and bag a brace. 1-2.
TC – 3-1 to Liverpool.
