A selection of Liverpool Football Club-related stories and titbits you may have missed over the past seven days…

New big-money signing Christian Benteke will wear the famous No.9 shirt at Anfield, it has been confirmed. The Belgium striker will follow in the footsteps of such famous names as Ian Rush, Robbie Fowler and Fernando Torres, although in more recent years the number has adorned the likes of El Hadji Diouf, Andy Carroll and Iago Aspas.

Unfortunately fans will have to wait a little longer to see both Benteke and fellow newbie Roberto Firmino in action. The duo have been omitted from the squad that will travel to Finland for Saturday’s friendly with HJK Helsinki on fitness grounds.

No fewer than seven first team fixtures between now and the end of November have been altered due to television coverage and European football commitments. They include the first Merseyside derby of the season at Goodison Park which will now take place at 1.30pm on Sunday October 4 and be broadcast by Sky Sports. Former Reds midfielder Danny Murphy has revealed he held talks with manager Brendan Rodgers about the vacant first team coaching role which was subsequently filled by Gary McAllister. “A few weeks ago I did have a chat with Brendan about the possibility of maybe working with him and the club again but it didn’t quite materialise,” quote the Liverpool ECHO. “It was actually an honour to be thought of by him – being in his company for a few hours was great, he was very impressive.”

Uruguayan attackers Juan Manuel Sanabria (15) and Augustin Pereira (16), both of whom play for Nacional, are on Merseyside for a trial.

Speaking of Uruguayans, centre-back Sebastian Coates has revealed that the prospect of regular football was behind his departure from L4. “It was not certain I would leave Liverpool this summer,” revealed Coates in quotes published by the Newcastle Chronicle. “But I always thought I would have to speak with the club and see what the situation was. I knew it was a great opportunity to come to Sunderland and play regularly in the Premier League. That is why I’m here.”

Andre Wisdom’s loan move to Norwich City has been officially confirmed by the club. The 22-year-old defender’s only appearance of pre-season came during the 4-0 win over the Thai All Stars in Bangkok.

Liverpool U21s suffered a heavy defeat in their latest pre-season friendly, going down 4-0 at Chester. Over 2,600 supporters were on hand to see John Rooney, younger brother of England star Wayne, fire a hat-trick. Liverpool U21s: Fulton, Randall (McLaughlin 60), Cleary (Polgar 60), Paez (O’Hanlon 60), Whelan (Hart 45), Rossiter (Gomez 60), Kent (Brannagan 60), Chirivella (Marsh 60), Wilson (Yesil 60), Sinclair, Ojo (Yesil 60).
