Here’s what’s circulating today:

New Speculation

Name: Ashley Williams
Club: Swansea City
Nationality: Welsh
Position: Defence
Value: £9-£10m

Swansea City skipper Ashley Williams is said to be a summer transfer target for Liverpool after excelling in the Premier League during the past two seasons.

A player former Swans manager Brendan Rodgers knows well, Williams is also attracting the attention of Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United, according to reports.

Fresh from leading his side to next month’s Capital One Cup final, the Welsh international’s stock has never been higher and it would be understandable to see other teams casting their eye on him enviously.

With Jamie Carragher approaching the end of his career, and Uruguayan understudy Sebastian Coates looking to leave in the pursuit of more first team football, a bid from Liverpool would make sense.

Vital Verdict
A very good and experienced player who given Rodgers’ connections to Swansea could easily end up at Anfield.

Likelihood (out of 5):

Name: Jack Butland
Club: Birmingham City
Nationality: English
Position: Goalkeeper
Value: £5-£7m

Birmingham City goalkeeper Jack Butland is back on Liverpool’s radar following speculation that current number one Pepe Reina could be set for a summer return to Barcelona.

Butland was first linked to the Reds in the summer but with the Blues now in financial difficult and acting chairman Peter Pannu announcing the whole squad is up for sale, the story potentially has greater weight this time around.

The England international is regarded as one of the brightest goalkeeping talents in the country and a number of other clubs, including Fulham and Southampton, are also interested.

The 19-year-old’s agent Gary Mellor revealed to that bids have already been made and rejected but he is hopeful the asking price will come down as the window nears closing.

“There’s a lot of clubs interested but no one yet has matched Birmingham’s valuation… I don’t really know what they want at the moment – they turned down £6m from Southampton but they will probably accept less now because obviously it’s getting towards the end of the window and they need to get money in,” said Mellor.

Vital Verdict
A top talent who already has the ability to play at a higher level than the Championship. If the rumours about Reina are true then purchasing Butland would make sense.

Likelihood (out of 5):

Name: Chung-yong Lee
Club: Bolton Wanderers
Nationality: South Korean
Position: Winger
Value: £5m

Fit again Bolton Wanderers winger Chung-yong Lee has been the subject of a formal offer from at least one unnamed Premier League club, Sky Sports understands.

With Liverpool and Stoke City long-term admirers of the 24-year-old it is speculated that the club’s identity could be one of the two.

The South Korean international was highly sought-after a couple of years ago before being sidelined for almost a year due to a broken leg.

No price is given in the report but other sources indicate £5m could be an acceptable figure to the Trotters.

Vital Verdict
Given the resources already at the club and the potential purchases of Philippe Coutinho and Tom Ince it is doubtful Liverpool would still be interested in Lee.

Likelihood (out of 5):

Name: Tendayi Darikwa
Club: Chesterfield
Nationality: English
Position: Winger
Value: £2m

Liverpool and neighbours Everton are believed to be leading the chase for Chesterfield’s highly-rated 21-year-old starlet Tendayi Darikwa.

Darikwa recently won December’s League Two’s Young Player of the Month award and many within the game believe he has a bright future.

The winger, who is of Zimbabwean decent, signed a new thee-year deal recently but Spireites chief executive Chris Turner admitted to TalkSPORT: “Tendayi is a fantastic talent and we would never stand in the way of a player from moving to a Premier League club.'”

Vital Verdict
Not a player we are overly familiar with but age and price make him a tempting possibility.

Likelihood (out of 5):

Name: Federico Fazio
Club: Sevilla
Nationality: Argentine
Position: Defender
Value: £5m

Fazio is into the final 18 months of his contract at Seville and therefore the Spanish side need to make a decision over his future quickly or risk losing the Argentine international for nothing in 12 months time.

ESPN have previously reported German side Hoffenheim had bids rejected for the player whilst there are also claims Zenit St Petersburg are interested.

The 25-year-old has been at Seville since 2007 and his agent, Alvaro Torres, has insisted that any move will have to suit both club and player.

“No player leaves a club to go somewhere he does not want. The offer must interest both Sevilla and the player,” commented Torres.

Vital Verdict
As with the Ashley Williams link it is perhaps understandable that Rodgers is looking at potential new centre-backs; take Carragher and Coates out of the equation and resources look a lot more stretched. Fazio is well regarded and the fee is easily within the Reds’ reach.

Previous Speculation Update

Name: Philippe Coutinho
Club: Inter Milan
Nationality: Brazilian
Position: Midfield
Value: £8-£10m

Liverpool’s bid to sign Brazilian international Philippe Coutinho is apparently under threat from fellow Premier League side Southampton.

The Reds upped their offer to the attacking midfielder’s current club Inter Milan from £6m to around the £8m mark yesterday but negotiations are still ongoing.

Subsequently Southampton, whose new manager Maurico Pochettino worked with the player during a loan spell at former club Espanyol last season, are believed to have had a £10.2m bid accepted by the Nerazzurri as they look the hijakck the deal.

However, the 20-year-old is said by other publications, including The Independent and Liverpool ECHO, to favour a move to Anfield should he depart this month.

Inter will obviously be looking to recoup as much money as possible for Coutinho which means Kop boss Brendan Rodgers could be forced to match the Saints bid in order to capture his man.

Vital Verdict
Lots of pace and skill and could provide a great wildcard for the remainder of the season. Best position is behind a main striker however and given the usual 4-3-3 formation operated by Rodgers he may have to play out wide.

Likelihood (out of 5):

New Speculation

Name: Michael Ngoo
Club: Hearts
Nationality: English
Position: Striker
Value: Loan

Liverpool U21 striker Michael Ngoo is wanted on loan by cash-strapped Scottish Premier League outfit Hearts.

The Edinburgh based side are operating under transfer restrictions but can bring youngsters in on loan as shown last week when acquiring fellow Reds player Danny Wilson.

Ngoo is yet to make his full Liverpool debut but has impressed regularly in the youth setup and the timing appears to be right to expose him to first-team football elsewhere.

The 20-year-old is expected to complete the deal today so he is eligible to play in Saturday’s Scottish Communities League Cup semi-final against Inverness.

Vital Verdict
Similar in stature to Andy Carroll, it is unlikely Ngoo will get a chance in the Liverpool first-team so a move away makes sense. A talented player though who should not be sold just yet.
