New Speculation

Name: Dieumerci Mbokani
Club: Anderlecht
Nationality: Congolese
Position: Striker
Value: £12-£17m

27-year-old Mbokani returned to Belgium football last season after a brief spell playing for Monaco and on-loan at Wolfsburg.

In 41 league games since the Congolese striker has bagged an impressive 29 goals to allegedly spike interest from Liverpool, Norwich, Southampton and Tottenham.

Anderlecht are reluctant to part with any of their key men midway through the current campaign, but concede that deals could be done in the summer.

Chairman Roger Vanden Stock told the club’s official website: “Mbokani says he will remain until the summer. We have agreed that he can leave in June…

“English clubs have seen what Benteke [Christian, Aston Villa striker] is capable of and they know that Dieu is even better. A transfer fee of ?10million (£8.5m)? I think it would be closer to ?20million (£17m).”

Vital Verdict
Liverpool know first hand what Benteke is capable but even if Dieu is better it is very unlikely Liverpool would be interested given his age and perhaps more importantly the price quoted.

Likelihood (out of 5):
One

Name: Wilfried Bony
Club: Vitesse Arnhem
Nationality: Ivorian
Position: Striker
Value: £9-£12m

Liverpool are said to be one of a number of clubs across Europe ready to pounce after Dutch side Vitesse Arnhem revealed they are ready to sell in-form striker Wilfried Bony.

Chelsea and CSKA Moscow are also thought to be keen after Vitesse general manager Erwin Kasakowski admitted to national newspaper Algemeen Dagblad: “We have promised Wilfried that we will consider any serious offers from him that would take him a step higher.”

The 24-year-old, who is contracted to the club until 2015, is currently away with the Ivory Coast at the African Cup of Nations and has notched an impressive 16 goals in 18 league outings this term.

Vital Verdict
Bony is a name that is often linked to the Premier League but seemingly Liverpool’s attention has moved away from strikers since the purchase of Daniel Sturridge and return to fitness of Fabio Borini. A good player who needs to test himself in a stronger league but doubtful it will be with the Reds.

Likelihood (out of 5):
Two

Previous Speculation Update

Name: Philippe Coutinho
Club: Inter Milan
Nationality: Brazilian
Position: Midfield
Value: £8-£10m

Liverpool’s latest bid to sign Brazilian international Philippe Coutinho, believed to be worth £8.5m, has been accepted by Inter Milan tonight, we understand.

The club’s original bid was turned down at the beginning of the week and a recent improved £7.6m offer received the same response.

Undeterred Liverpool’s third bid, which saw the payment also restructured so the Italians received more money up front, appears to have been successful.

The player, who turned down the opportunity to discuss a transfer to Southampton, is expected to arrive on Merseyside for a medical at the beginning of next week.

Vital Verdict
Courtinho, if it goes through, will be a good signing; his pace, skill and unpredictability could provide a great wildcard for the remainder of the season. Best position is behind a main striker however and given the usual 4-3-3 formation operated by Rodgers he may have to play out wide. Fits the model of new Liverpool signings in terms of age, price and sell-on value etc.

Likelihood (out of 5):
Five

Name: Michael Ngoo
Club: Hearts
Nationality: English
Position: Striker

Liverpool U21 striker Michael Ngoo has joined Scottish Premier League outfit Hearts on loan until the end of the season.

The 20-year-old is available to make his debut in today’s Scottish Communities League Cup semi-final against Inverness.

Vital Verdict
A good move for all parties. Ngoo is a talented player but is unlikely to experience first-team football at Liverpool any time soon.
