Here’s what’s circulating today:

New Speculation

Name: Christian Eriksen
Club: Ajax
Nationality: Danish
Position: Midfield
Value: £20m

Talented 20-year-old playmaker Christian Eriksen has been told his career will be best served by remaining in Holland for at least another two seasons despite interest from a number of Europe’s leading clubs.

Ajax coach and former Dutch international Frank de Boer told a weekend press conference: “Eriksen will be 23 if he stays at Ajax for two more seasons. That would be a good age for him to make the big step.”

The Dane was heavily linked with Liverpool last year and the recent pursuits of the Wesley Sneijder and Philippe Coutinho would suggest the club are eager to add more creativity to their midfield.

Eriksen’s agent, Martin Schoots, last week admitted there was nothing to report at this time but refused to rule out the chance of a move.

“Christian will only concentrate on his football, although you never know what can happen,” Schoots said.

Vital Verdict
A top quality prospect but one who will consequently have an incredibly high price which is likely to be out of Liverpool’s current financial reach. The move for Coutinho looks destined to happen so it is unlikely the Reds will be attempting to purchase Eriksen any time soon anyway. No doubting his ability however and he could go on to be one of the greats of the modern game.

Previous Speculation Update

Name: Philippe Coutinho
Club: Inter Milan
Nationality: Brazilian
Position: Midfield
Value: £8-£10m

Liverpool are finally expected to complete the £8.5m deal for Coutinho within the next 48 hours. The transfer has dragged on for well over a week with the Reds having a series of initial offers rejected.

The Brazilian international still needs to undergo a medical whilst some outstanding paper work, including a work permit, also needs to be finalised.

Inter appear happy with the agreement and have publically given their backing to the proposed move.

Club president Massimo Moratti is quoted in today’s Italian media as saying: “There are certain opportunities that should be taken.

“Sometimes players are able to get more playing time, and so I think it could be a great opportunity for Coutinho and a deal that might work out well for us.”

If the deal is completed, the 20-year-old will become the club’s second signing of this transfer window following the £12m capture of Daniel Sturridge from Chelsea.

Vital Verdict
Courtinho will be a good signing; his pace, skill and unpredictability should provide a great wildcard for the remainder of the season. Best position is behind a main striker however and given the usual 4-3-3 formation operated by Rodgers he may have to play out wide. Fits the model of new Liverpool signings in terms of age, price and sell-on value etc.

New Speculation

Name: Luis Suarez
Club: Bayern Munich
Nationality: Uruguayan
Position: Striker
Value: £40m

Liverpool’s star striker Luis Suarez is top of Bayern Munich’s summer shopping list, according to The Independent.

Reports suggest former Barcelona boss Pep Guardiola, who takes charge at the Allianz Arena in the summer, will be given as much as £240m to revamp the German giants when he arrives.

The Reds will not want to lose their top scorer, last weekend he became the first Liverpool player since Michael Owen in 2001-02 to reach 20 goals in a season before the end of January, but the continued absence of Champions League football weakens their position.

Suarez signed a new lucrative contract at Anfield in the summer, so any deal will involve a huge some of money, but given the 26-year-old’s numerous high-profile problems in English football a move cannot be totally ruled out.

Vital Verdict
This news will be the last thing Liverpool fans want to hear; Suarez is clearly the club’s best player at this moment in time. Few will disagree that talent wise the controversial South America is amongst the best in the world and imagining the struggling Merseysiders without his goals and fighting spirit is a very sobering thought. It will take a massive bid for him to leave but given our lack of competitiveness and Suarez’s disillusionment with many aspects of life in the Premier League, it cannot be totally ruled out.

Previous Speculation Update

Name: Sebastian Coates
Club: Gremio
Nationality: Uruguayan
Position: Defender
Value: £7m

Reds defender Sebastian Coates will have done his chances of earning a move away from Anfield no good whatsoever during Sunday’s 3-2 defeat to League One outfit Oldham Athletic.

The Uruguayan, who has been understandably frustrated by a lack of game time under current Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers, failed to take his chance when handed a rare start yesterday, producing a poor individual display which contributed to the Reds’ shock exit.

Brazilian side Germio were linked with his services over the weekend but club director Rui Costa has flatly denied that they are looking to sign the 22-year-old, telling South American media outlet UOL: “You can forget that, just forget it.”

Liverpool are understood to be open to Coates’ departure should the deal be agreeable to the club and if a replacement can be found before the transfer window shuts.

Previously Italian giants Juventus had been connected with a loan bid but with funds low Brendan Rodgers could be tempted to cash in and sell permanently.

Vital Verdict
Although the destination and type of transfer are unclear it is highly likely Coates will be on his way out shortly. He’s a talented player but, as the Oldham match showed, he needs to be playing more often to fulfil his undoubted potential. With Martin Skrtel, Daniel Agger and Jamie Carragher all in front of him, that doesn’t look like happening at Liverpool.
