Sunday’s game against Aston Villa gave a clear indication as to where Liverpool’s deficiencies are in the squad.

The Reds struggled to get over the line against the relegation-battling Villains, who are currently in the drop zone. Nevertheless, Jurgen Klopp’s side did claim all three points but left it late in the day to do so.

Sadio Mane broke the deadlock after 71 minutes and youngster Curtis Jones scored the clincher with just a minute of normal time to play.

But after the hour mark, Liverpool had just one shot on target with Divock Origi starting upfront, with Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain in the midfield.

Replying to a fan on The Athletic’s Q&A session on Sunday, Pearce gave his views on what Liverpool will be up to over the summer.

Should Liverpool sign Thiago Alcantara?

Yes

Yes

No

No

When asked about how many players he believes the Reds will sign, he said, “All up in the air at the moment. As Klopp said himself earlier this week things could change later in the window when there’s more clarity over revenues. My guess would be 2 or 3 new faces. Nothing happening at this stage.”

Even though Liverpool have won the Premier League for the first time in 30 years this season, the squad is far from perfect and we have seen many performances similar to what we saw on Sunday.

Bayern Munich’s Thiago Alcantara has been heavily linked with a move to Anfield over the past few days and could indeed be one of those faces that Pearce referenced.

The Reds definitely need to bring in some fresh faces. With the Timo Werner deal falling through at the 11th hour, questions remain as to whether the Merseysiders have enough funds to bring in sufficient quality.
