Liverpool are stepping up their attempts to replace long-serving defender Dejan Lovren before the summer transfer window closes.

What’s the word?

The man in question is the Sampdoria defender Omar Colley, who is believed to be courted by the Scottish champions Celtic.

Aged 27 and an international player for The Gambia, he is a highly-respected player in Italy and the caught the eye of Juventus boss Masimilliano Allegri two seasons ago, having famously keeping Cristiano Ronaldo at bay during a Serie A match, via Foroyaa.

With Dejan Lovren having left us to join Zenit St Petersburg for £10.9m a few weeks ago, there has been a void in our squad that must be filled.

I’ve always thought a Ragnar Klavan-style signing would have done the trick, but we may be about to do better than that.

The Italian news outlet The Republic (via CalcioNews24) reported that we have registered an interest in Colley, but have not put in a bid at this stage.

They added that Blucerchiati would be willing to part ways with the Gambian centre-back for a fee of around €11m (£10m), which could be too good for us to turn down.

Ideal replacement

Having a player such as the £4.5m-rated powerhouse in our side would not only provide as a perfect replacement for the departed Lovren, but apply essential strength in depth at the back for our title defence.

For me, we are in desperate need to sign another defender. Any further repercussions to the injuries sustained to either Joel Matip or Joe Gomez could seriously hamper our title challenge this season. Hence why we need to have cover in every position this season.

With Kostas Tsimikas having already arrived and with Thiago Alcantara’s set to imminently be our second signing, it would tee off a successful summer for us if Colley was our final arrival.

But the boss might have other ideas, with us looking at Watford’s Ismaila Sarr as well. Time will tell as to what he will prioritise. Here’s hoping it’s reinforcements at the back that he chooses.
