Following the Reds’ 1-1 draw with Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday, one Liverpool player really impressed me and has no doubt cemented his place within Jurgen Klopp’s first-team thoughts with defensive options currently depleted.

23-year-old Nat Phillips made his second start for the club against the Seagulls at the weekend and was awarded man of the match by WhoScored with a 7.57/10 match rating – and I think that Phillips has put himself in serious contention for first-team football from now on and has the potential to go on to become one of the best in the league in my opinion, almost like the new Virgil van Dijk.

The Dutchman’s return towards the end of the season will be a huge positive for the team but for Phillips in particular – with his experience and talent a great example for Phillips to learn from and follow from as he continues his career.

It is incredible to think that the defender was close to leaving the club this summer, stating himself that he was looking forward to the transfer to finally kickstart his career with regular first-team football, so thank god that the transfer never failed to materialise and that the Reds kept hold of him, as Phillips is proving to Klopp and the fans that he is a player that can really make a difference for the club.

I’ve been really impressed by the defender and I’m really looking forward to him progressing under Klopp – Phillips is a monster in the air and is such a great physical presence in defence and long may it continue for the Reds.
