Sunday night saw Liverpool run out 4-0 victors over Wolves at Anfield in their return to Premier League action, with the club securing their biggest league win of the season so far.

Jurgen Klopp’s side looked back to their usual ways during the game, pulling out a stellar performance for the long-awaited Anfield faithful to enjoy – but one player really stood out to me during the game and that was Brazilian midfielder Fabinho.

The 27-year-old has been featuring at centre-back alongside Joel Maitp as of late due to the long term injuries to both Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez, leaving Matip as the only senior centre-back at the club’s disposal. Youngsters such as Nat Phillips and Rhys Williams have both featured for the club in central defence recently in both the Premier League and Champions League and the pair have performed well given the circumstances.

However, Fabinho seems to be the preferred choice alongside Matip and I don’t disagree, as I feel the Brazilian is one of the best centre-back’s in the league despite being a defensive midfielder and never really having to play in central defence before joining Liverpool two years ago.

During the game against Wolves, Fabinho made 1 tackle and 5 clearances, as well as completing a 93.6% pass success rate from defence, assuring his ability and performance in central defence for the Reds with them keeping a clean sheet in 3 of his last 4 games at centre-back.

So far this season, Tottenham have the best defensive record with just 9 goals conceded. According to WhoScored, their best performing central defender has been Toby Alderweireld, meaning that the Belgium would be the best centre-back in the league at the moment if you went by the stats.

When comparing the stats between Fabinho and Alderweireld – the Brazilian has kept the same amount of clean sheets as Alderweireld and has made more interceptions, tackles, and successful tackles than him too.

For me, I think that Fabinho is easily one of the best central defenders in the league at the moment and the most impressive part is that he doesn’t even play there. He has been a strong presence in defence for the Reds and that will no doubt continue as the season goes on.

What do you think Liverpool fans, has Fabinho impressed you this season? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section down below…
