Opinion: Southgate making huge mistake with Trent

|

England has won one group game and drawn the second leaving them with a must-win game to ensure that they finish top of their group in the World Cup taking place in Qatar. England is currently at top of the table with one game to play.

Southgate’s team selection has been a matter of talking point for a long time now. To the surprise of many Manchester City’s Phil Foden and Liverpool’s Trent Alexander Arnold are both yet to play a single minute in Qatar.

Is Southgate doing this on purpose, or is he marshaling his troops for when England proceeds to the latter stages of the tournament?

Ex-Manchester United player Gary Neville mentioned after the game, “I think nations like Spain, Brazil, and France would have Trent Alexander-Arnold and Phil Foden in the starting XI. Phil Foden not starting for England is a massive shame. He’s the best talent in this country.”

England was quite bad in the game against the United States. They lacked creativity and had close to no penetration. Southgate still insisted on leaving Alexander-Arnold and Foden on the bench.

Many fans are shocked that Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola who are coaching some of England’s most talented generational players are being kept on the bench. Many believed that Foden and Trent could have made a difference in the game against the United States which ended 0-0. A win in that game would have ensured that England go through to the next round.

I think Southgate is not doing the right thing by putting Arnold and foden on the bench without been use even as substitute.
