Jermaine Pennant claims he’s satisfied to be the maker, rather then the taker of chances at Liverpool.

Pennant made an impressive debut for Liverpool on Saturday when he came on as a second-half substitute and was involved in setting up both goals in the 3-2 defeat by Kaiserslautern.

Although the 23yr old admits its always great to get on the scoresheet, he claims he gets just as much satisfaction from setting up the chances for his team mates.

‘Setting up and scoring a goal is the same to me. Setting up a team-mate is just as good to me as scoring, Pennant told the club website.

‘I don’t mind not scoring goals as long as I’m getting a lot of assists.

‘It’s always nice to score but if I can get as many assists as possible, then scoring goals will be a bonus.’

He added: ‘It’s always nice personally to get off to a good start and to get the nerves out of the way. Now I’ve got one game under my belt, I think it’s going to be much easier for me.

‘I know how the team play, I know how the manager wants me to play and I’m just looking forward to the next game.’

Pennant feels Liverpool won’t have signed him if he hadn’t already proven himself as a top Premiership player.

He said: ‘I wouldn’t be here if I wasn’t a good footballer. Now I’m here, hopefully I can put in the best performances that I can and hopefully benefit the team as well.

‘Obviously Rafa has brought me in for a reason so hopefully I can put that to the test and it will come right.

‘I’m playing alongside great players so hopefully I can play as much as possible and learn from the players around me.

‘No disrespect to Birmingham but Liverpool won the Champions League so there’s great players all around me. From goalkeeper through to striker, I’m seeing a difference in the quality.

‘Playing with quality is only going to help my game. We have got players you can gel quickly with and we’re on the same wavelength.

‘Steve Finnan, behind me at right-back, has been around for ages and he’s got a lot of experience, so has Luis Garcia who also plays on the right, and it’s nice we are all gelling well.’
