With the January transfer window in full swing, you would hope that the Reds would act swiftly to bring in a new defender and further cover at the back of the injuries sustained to the Liverpool defence already this season, with first-choice pairing Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez both out for the remainder of the season.

However, recent reports have suggested, including from Jurgen Klopp himself, that it is unlikely that the club will make a signing this month whether that be a defender or otherwise – with it more likely to see business conducted in the summer when more money becomes available in the budget.

One player that had been on the Reds radar for some time and had been linked with a heavy interest in Napoli defender, and no not Koulibaly, but his teammate Nikola Maksimovic.

The Serbian defender had been monitored by Liverpool previously according to Napoli owner Aurelio De Laurentiis, as revealed by TalkSPORT presenter Jim White yesterday – but the Reds have since cooled their interest in the 29-year-old according to the Scotsman…

“He said to me ‘I thought you were going to refer to our defender Nikola Maksimovic, the Serbian who is 29 years of age, and Liverpool’s previous interest in him. So I said ‘are Liverpool still interested in your defender?’ He interrupted me to say of course with injury problems to Gomez and Van Dijk but no they haven’t heard from them of late.”

The revelation came after White asked if the club were open to seeling Kalidou Koulibaly this month, to which De Laurentiis said only if a club were to offer a crazy fee such as £100 million – the Reds had also been linked with a move for the Senegalese defender but for me, as I have previously said, that is a player and situation that the club must stay away from.

What do you think Liverpool fans, should the club reignite their interest in Maksimovic? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section down below…
