A journalist has confirmed that missing out on Borussia Dortmund’s Mario Gotze in 2016 was a “blessing in disguise”.

The 27-year-old was at rivals Bayern Munich at the time and had just secured three Bundesliga titles in a row with the Bavaria based-outfit, as well as back-to-back DFB-Pokals.

There is no doubting that the 63-cap international’s time in Munich was a success but only made 11 league starts during his final season, scoring just three times and providing four assists.

His options were clear, stay with the reigning champions or seek a move elsewhere in pursuit of first-team football. The Reds were confident of capturing him for as little as £20m, but instead opted to go back to Dortmund, the club that he had played for since he was eight years old.

However, David Lynch of the Evening Standard believes that had Jurgen Klopp pursued with his top transfer target, he perhaps would not have signed Sadio Mane from Southampton for £34m.

Would Liverpool be where they are now if Gotze came instead of Salah?

The 28-year-old has gone on to become a superstar for us, winning the Champions League last season, dominating the Premier League and is on the verge of helping us capture our first league title in 30 years.

In 161 appearances for the Reds, he has scored 77 goals and provided 34 assists, an incredible return for a player that is now valued at £108m.

I dread to think what life would have been like without Mane playing at Anfield every week, especially if we were to contract myopathy while on our books.

Lynch is spot on. I’m sure the majority of us would not swap Sadio Mane for any player in the world because of what he has achieved with us.
