Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp remains keen on bringing Bayern Munich midfielder Thiago Alcantara to Anfield this summer, but the hierarchy have made it clear that he must sell to buy.

What’s the latest?

The Bundesliga giants have been open about Thiago’s preference to leave the club this summer, with the club’s CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge confirming that he wishes to depart from the German champions.

The Reds continue to be heavily linked with a move for the 29-year-old midfielder but there has not been much progress regarding getting a potential deal over the line.

Would you swap Naby Keita for Thiago Alcantara?

Funds for incoming transfers are believed to be short, following the temporary suspension of last season’s Premier League campaign which ended in Liverpool securing their first league title in 30 years.

But according to Kicker, both Thiago and Klopp are still keen for the move to happen but it is the board room at Anfield that is currently preventing it from happening.

The report adds that the holdup is based around the Reds’ income loss due to matches being played behind closed doors. Meaning that the German tactician would have to part ways with one of his players before he brings anyone else in.

Naby Keita is the name that has been proposed as someone that the Merseysiders could potentially cash in on to fund a deal to bring in Thiago.

Madness upstairs

Granted, it has been a tough time for clubs around the world with fans still unable to attend the stadiums. Anfield has been a different place but it did not stop Liverpool from winning the Premier League.

With this in mind, Klopp is not likely to want to sacrifice Keita to land Thiago, having hit an impressive run of form once the campaign got going again.

Klopp described the Guinea international’s performance against Brighton as “absolutely great” and was delighted that he keeps improving week by week, which is something that he will want to see more of next season.

This makes it all the more concerning why the bureaucracy upstairs would want this to happen. We doubt that Klopp would sanction such a move to take place when he has yet to have seen his true potential in a Liverpool shirt. A crazy idea.
