Timo Werner has poured doubt over a transfer to Liverpool as the RB Leipzig star mentioned the likes of Manchester City and Manchester United in his thought process ahead of a potential summer move.
Speaking to Sky Sports News, the Germany international revealed that he is unsure what his future will hold in the upcoming summer transfer window with a plethora of clubs reportedly interested in the 24-year-old striker, yet Liverpool, for the most part, have seemingly been viewed as the favourites to land Werner.
The Athletic reported in February that the £67.5m-rated former Stuttgart attacker is holding out for an approach from Liverpool following inquiries from Manchester United and FC Barcelona, yet Werner’s latest comments have seemingly muddied the water for Jurgen Klopp’s side to sign the Bundesliga star.
Would you like to see Timo Werner at Liverpool?
The RB Leipzig striker said: “At this time in professional soccer there are two different variations. The first is to be part of a team like Liverpool or Manchester City. They have a good working team. The teams have also great coaches. But this is the question: do you want to go to that kind of team, because the situation is already that hard for each member and you want to be a part of it? That’s one point you have to look at.
“The other side are teams which need some big changes, because they just won a few big titles, but they are not able to compete on the highest level anymore. For me, Manchester United is one of these teams.”
These comments could be a blow for Liverpool in their pursuit of Werner, yet it could also serve as a stern kick the Merseyside club need to accelerate their business and secure a deal for the German superstar before another club comes knocking for the 24-year-old’s signature, which is likely to be in high demand this summer.
