Liverpool are seeking to bring Brighton & Hove Albion defender Ben White to Merseyside during the summer months, according to reports.

The Reds are expected to have a quiet summer in terms of incoming players this year due to the temporary suspension of the 2019/20 campaign, which saw the likes of RB Leipzig Timo Werner opt to join Chelsea instead of Jurgen Klopp’s side.

With Adam Lallana and Dejan Lovren leaving the club following their unforgettable title-winning season, gaps are required to be filled in the squad.

Jamal Lewis has been a name that has been reverberated across the English football landscape as a possible backup for Andy Robertson. But it seems that Klopp has identified someone that can be cover at centre-back.

According to the Mirror, White is Liverpool’s third option this summer and is on their shopping list should they decide to make a move, with Bournemouth defender Lloyd Kelly also being targeted.

The report adds that the Reds are looking for young players that have real potential that can compete for a long-term place in the first eleven.

Sensible to prioritise the future

At 22, the £4.95m-rated starlet is still a young player that could potentially have a long career at Anfield, which is the way that sporting director Michael Edwards sees it.

White, who spent last season on loan at Leeds United, is wanted by the Whites permanently and has been unable to do a deal with his parent club, Brighton.

After playing regularly for Marcelo Bielsa’s side last season, the question remains as to whether the young centre-back would be willing to take the role as backup for the likes of Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and possibly, Joel Matip.

The ever-reliable James Pearce stated that Liverpool are monitoring the progress of White and would be looking to do business if the right price can be found.

This is a sensible approach for Liverpool to take. Not only are they protecting the current squad that they have, but actively looking to bolster it with young players that can compete for positions in the team. Very clever from Edwards, Klopp and the backroom staff.
