Liverpool have been told the price that they will have to pay to capture the Sevilla defender Diego Carlos.

What’s the word?

The Reds have been monitoring the progress of the Brazilian after Marca (via Sport Witness) revealed that they were looking to improve their defensive line going into the 2019/20 campaign.

Manchester City have taken an interest in the 27-year-old, who has been in fine form for Los Nervionenses since his move from the Ligue 1 side Nantes last summer, per Marca.

After making their initial enquiries, Liverpool now know how much it will cost them to bring Carlos to Anfield in time for the 2020/21 campaign.

According to the AS (via the Mirror), a fee of £70m would be needed to bring the Brazilian to the Premier League, with Sevilla not keen on engaging with negotiations this summer.

Despite this, it was previously claimed that the La Liga outfit by Marca that they would be willing to cash in on Carlos after making up the losses they made after failing to qualify for the Champions League.

A price too far

It is a lot of money for Liverpool to pay up for a player that has been in a major European league but has shown just why the Reds will be interested in Carlos and his services.

Since he arrived from France, the centre-back has scored twice from 41 appearances and his contract does not expire until 2024, as per TransferMarkt.

From these games, Whoscored recorded that Carlos averaged five clearances, 4.8 long balls and a pass success rate of 84.2%, highlighting him as a competent and dominant defender that could fit into Klopp’s system of playing out from the back.

But with the astronomical price tag, it is highly unlikely that the Merseysiders will pay the fee that Sevilla are asking for Costa due to their financial complications during the temporary suspension of the Premier League season.

This caused them to lose out on Timo Werner, who eventually moved to Chelsea as they were not willing to pay the German’s release clause.

Because of this, Liverpool will no doubt look for cheaper alternatives in the form of Norwich City’s Jamal Lewis and Bournemouth’s Lloyd Kelly.
