Liverpool midfielder Naby Keita will be sidelined for tonight’s FA Cup tie away to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge due to a hip injury.
The 32-cap Guinea international was absent for the Reds’ 3-0 defeat to Watford at Vicarage Road and has not recovered in time to travel down to Central London for their fifth-round clash against the five-time Premier League winners.
Despite coming under intense scrutiny in recent weeks, segments of the Kop faithful have stuck by Keita who has had an interesting time at Anfield thus far. Manager Jurgen Klopp told reporters (quoted by the club’s official website) that the Guinean will not be fit enough to compete.
Should Naby Keita be sold in the summer?
“A little, little, little bit but enough with his hip”, he said. “I can’t really say more, that’s the only information I got from the medical department. “[He] is not ready [but] could be ready after that game, but for that game not. It’s not serious but obviously serious enough.”
Keita made the move to Liverpool following his £48m move from RB Leipzig and has been desperately unlucky since making the move across Europe. Saying this, he was part of last season’s squad that helped the Reds clinch their sixth European crown and complete an unprecedented intercontinental treble.
However, a catalogue of injuries has set him back greatly with many fans expecting big things upon his arrival on Merseyside. With this in mind, those doubts are understandable due to his lack of goals and assists.
His qualities are apparent and this latest injury will no doubt be another setback for him. There are big things to come from him and he will be looking to prove his doubters wrong.
