Liverpool’s hopes of a revival of form in the second half of the season were left shattered after they were thrashed 3-0 by Wolves in the Premier League on Saturday.
There was no standout positives to take out of the game for Jurgen Klopp, but once again there was certainly some standout negatives to consider.
Awful performances from the likes of Joe Gomez, Thiago Alcantara and Joel Matip will especially need looking at before the Merseyside Derby against Everton at Anfield next Monday.
However, it’s the latter name that needs adressing specifically- Joel Matip.
The 31-year-old had the best season of his career in 2021/22, but has been nowhere near that level this time around, struggling for both fitness and form.
With his current contract at Anfield set to expire in the summer and his performances showing no signs of improving anytime soon, links with a move away from the club have started to build speed.
With Virgil Van Dijk now also being 31-years-old and experiencing more injury problems than ever before, it would be a smart move to cash in on Matip while there is still value to gain.
Younger options like Evan Ndicka at Frankfurt will be available to sign on a free transfer in the summer when his contract expires.
The 23-year-old has started every game in the Bundesliga so far this season and is just entering the prime of his career.
If Matip doesn’t turn things around soon, we could be seeing the last months of the Cameroonian’s Liverpool career.
